“The door slams shut”On 18 February 1943, Hans and Sophie Scholl were discovered while delivering leaflets critical of the regime at the University of Munich. Only four days later, their death sentence was executed.

The chamber opera tells the story of the last hour in the life of the siblings, who, aware of the impending execution, spend in their prison cell. The focus is on two people who once, out of humanistic and Christian conviction, have fallen into absolute helplessness. Already during his studies, Udo Zimmermann dealt with the White Rose.

Based on a text by his brother Ingo Zimmermann, he wrote an opera entitled The White Rose as a final thesis at the Dresden Academy of Music in 1967.
